"264 days 8 hours 25 minutes 5 seconds," it said on Taemin's timer necklace. What did this time mean? It meant that he had that much time left until he would meet his soulmate. It was said that if your soulmate was found by you, your timer would blink once, and you would have to go find him/her. But Taemin wasn't sure if he should believe it. He wanted to believe it, he really did, but as the years passed by, he just couldn't take it anymore. How could a little timer around his neck predict his future? His 18 year old self just couldn't wait any longer. Apparently, Taemin's soulmate was supposed to show up in less than a year, but that fact just disgusted him whenever he thought about it. Even if he did find his soulmate earlier, no miracle would happen until his "true" time was up: when the timer reaches zero. Also, whenever a nice guy would try to "seduce" him, Taemin would check his timer and sigh; no matter how much he liked the guy, he just wasn't his soulmate since the timer didn't blink. But one thing Taemin knew for sure was that his soulmate was still out there because his timer was still counting down; if the timer goes blank, that would mean that his soulmate didn't have his/her timer anymore, whether it was because his soulmate took it off for good or it was because of death. Whenever he realized that his soulmate was still alive, he would try to think positively about what his future would be like with his soulmate by his side, but at the same time, he didn't think it would be a reality. It all seemed like a fantaasy to him. For that reason, Taemin decided not to wear the necklace anymore; this was done on New Year's Day, when he had approximately 144 days 6 hours 17 minutes 5 seconds left. He wanted to be independent, and he thought that he would be able to find his soulmate without having some necklace show him who he should be with for the rest of his life. But this didn't turn out as well as he planned; everytime he found a guy that he really liked, their relationship never worked out in the end because he would realize that they never "clicked." He didn't seem to be satisfied with any of them, which led him to believe that there was always something missing in his relationship with the other guys. The problem was that he still hadn't figured out what that missing piece exactly was. It really irritated him to notice that he couldn't find his soulmate on his own, so he decided to go to one of his favorite relaxation spots in his town: the beach. It was the only beach nearby, so he always went there when he had the chance. To his surprise, there seemed to be someone there. "Why would anyone be out here at this time? It's midnight," he thought. (He knew it was because when it hit 12 AM, the bells in the clock tower nearby would ring.) Curious, Taemin slowly approached the boy sitting on the sand with his arms around his legs, like he was a little ball. He tapped the person on the shoulder to see that it was a boy around his age, and he was one of the cutest boys Taemin had ever seen. He looked so fragile that Taemin decided to talk to him for a bit. "Hey, what are you doing out this late? You might get hurt staying out here all alone." "Then what about you?" the other boy asked. His voice was not what Taemin expected to sound like; it was very low but at the same time it was calm and soothing. Another thing that caught Taemin's attention was his amazing smile that just made him want to smile back even though he had a rough day. "Well, I'm just out here because I've been having a bad day. What about you?" Taemin wanted to start a conversation with the other boy for some reason. "I might be out here for the same reaon you are." "So you must be having relationship problems too." The other boy's eyes grew bigger, like he was surprised. "Oh. No,no. Nevermind," he giggled, "I thought you were just out here because you were having one of those grumpy days." And he flashed his smile again, but he didn't face Taemin. For some reason, Taemin started paying very close attention to the boy's physical feature, from his very neatly combed hair to his oh-so-slender feet. "Umm, excuse me? Why are you looking at me like that?" He asked this with a very innocent look on his face, which startled Taemin. Taemin quickly turned to look away at the ocean; he didn't notice that he was looking at the other boy that thoroughly. It made the situation feel awkward for a while, so Taemin decided to change the topic. "The ocean's really tranquil today," Taemin said with a shaky voice. "Yeah. It's really nice being out here." Luckily the two stopped thinking about Taemin's awkward stare. The two of them ended up talking for quite a while, and for some reason, Taemin felt that he could be very open to this stranger, like they were friends for a long time. They got along pretty well, and they found out that they had so much in common; they liked singing when they were bored, eating lots of food, dancing, and even sitting at the beach when they were going through stress. They were having so much fun talking that they completely lost track of the time. The other boy checked his watch and stood up, saying that he had to leave. "It was very nice meeting you. Talking to you really made me happy," he said, "maybe we'll meet another time. You live nearby, right?" "Yeah..." Taemin was really disappointed to have to leave, but he realized something. "Oh! I never told you about myself! I'm Lee Taemin; 18 years old." "Oh yeah. I'm Lee Jinki; also 18 years old. It was nice meeting you today." And he was about to leave, but Taemin tugged on Jinki's sleeve. "Uhh, Jinki? I know this is a weird statement, but I was wondering if we could be friends..." "Sure! It never hurts to make new friends! And you're really nice to me!" And Jinki smiled at Taemin while sticking his hand out for a handshake. When Taemin shook his hand, he felt that Jinki's hand was freezing cold. "Jinki, your hands are freezing! How long were you out here?!" "A little longer than you were, but I'm okay! My house is nearby, so I can cozy myself up at home in my bed." Taemin didn't want Jinki to catch a cold, but most of all he wanted to find his chance to be able to meet Jinki again. "Here! Take this," Taemin said while handing out one of the two jackets he was wearing. "Put your hands in the pockets; it'll warm your hands quickly." Luckily, Taemin wore an extra jacket; offering Jinki his jacket would allow Taemin to see him again because he would have to soon hand it back to him. "Just give me the jacket when you have the chance. Here's my number; call me anytime." "Okay, thanks! I'll give this back to you soon. Bye new friend!" And Jinki walked home after waving goodbye. After receiving his first call from Jinki and meeting him a few times, Taemin decided that he wanted to get to know Jinki more. Eventually it all paid off, and they became the best of friends; they were really close. But perhaps a little too close. A few weeks passed by since they became friends, and Taemin started to get feelings toward Jinki. It hurt him a lot because he knew they weren't soulmates; Jinki had his timer around his neck, which probably meant his soulmate was still out there somewhere. Taemin didn't want to interfere anything going on in Jinki's life. This feeling didn't stop, and Taemin was struggling to keep it all to himself. He tried not to pay attention to Jinki's necklace until one cool night in May, Jinki and Taemin decided to look at the sunset at their usual meet spot: the beach. While Jinki was busy admiring the sunset, Taemin was busy focusing Jinki's timer; this was more than usual too. It was May 24th to be exact, and he could not help but to wonder who Jinki's soulmate was. Taemin asked him about it, but Jinki never wanted to talk about it. This reminded Taemin about how he was aupposed to find his soulmate soon if he still had his on, but he was pretty sure his soulmate found someone else by now. Taemin kept thinking about it, and it made him worry about what would happen in the future when Jinki finds his soulmate. Jinki seemed to have noticed that something was on Taemin's mind. "Taemin, what's wrong? Are you okay?" Jinki was pretty worried. Taemin didn't lift his head; he was in deep thought then decided to ask, "Jinki, what's your soulmate like? Have you met her yet?" Jinki stayed silent for a bit; he really didn't like talking about it, but he thought that now was an okay time to talk about it. Even if it weren't the right time, Taemin couldn't help but to ask. "Taemin, what makes you think it's a girl?" "Well, it's just...I was thinking..." "It's a he; a boy around my age." "So you've met him before? What's he like?" Taemin was slightly disapponted. "Actually I have seen him before but he didn't want to find me so I never showed myself to him." Jinki showed Taemin his blank timer. "I decided that giving up was the best option for me because I know I don't have a chance." Jinki started to tear up, so Taemin pulled him for a hug. "How do you know that? Jinki, you shouldn't give up hope..." Jinki pulled away from him, like he felt uncomfortable. "You don't understand!" His voice was shaky. "I searched for a long time, and I waited all this time to actually be with my soulmate; the one I was meant to be with, but he...he..." Then Jinki suddenly started to cry. Taemin was about to wipe Jinki's tears but Jinki just turned away. "Taemin, stop being so nice to me like this; you're just going to make me confused." His voice was very soft yet stern. "What are you talking about? You're my friend!" That's when the midnight bell rang at the clock tower. "Today's May 25th...the day I was supposed to meet my soulmate. Do you really want to know about my soulmate? He is 18 years old, he likes to go to the beach when he's feeling down, he likes listening to music, he's a great dancer, and on New Year's Day, the day I found him for the first time, he decided to throw away his timer." Taemin just stood there trying to process everything in his mind while Jinki was ready to leave. Jinki was about to walk off due to his heart being broken and his feelings being hurt, but Taemin grabbed him by the wrist; he had just realized that the person who hurt Jinki all this time was Taemin himself. "I'm sorry Jinki. I didn't know that taking my timer off would hurt my soulmate this much. I can see that I hurt you a lot. I'm so sorry. You should have said something." "How could I? You didn't need me, so I ended up giving up trying to approach you. Then that day at the beach, you approached me. How am I supposed to give up on you if you don't let me?" "So that's why you were grumpy?" Taemin giggled, but Jinki didn't think it was a funny matter. Taemin saw this and grabbed Jinki's hand. Then he let go, revealing his own timer. "I never threw it away. I kept it in my pocket all this time just in case one day I may want to put it back on. Jinki, I think I really like you...I've liked you since the day I met you. Something just told me that you were the right person for me. So, do you want to do the honors of putting the timer back around my neck? We should still have some time left." Jinki smiled and answered, "We have about a minute left." and he put the timerback on its rightful owner. Once it was placed, both their timers started blinking, and the timer started to countdown again. The two boys smiled at each other, and Taemin saw this as a chance to start over. He grabbed Jinki's hand and said, "Jinki, will you be my soulmate forever?" Jinki nodded and glanced at the timer. "We have a few seconds left." THREE.They sat down on the sand and looked at the sky, admiring the stars and the moon. TWO.Then they held each other's hands as if they were to never let go of each other no matter what. ONE.It was finally almost over; their quests to find each other had come to an end. ZERO.It was now the end of their journey but at the same time, it was only the beginning. Their timers were done counting down, and they both knew it was now the beginning of a whole new phase together; they had all the time in the world to be with each other. Like all soulmates, the two believed that timing was very important; that was how they found each other. Without it, they probably would have never met. They met each other at "the right time," and it would be a day they both could never forget. The day when everything started anew for the two, and that day was...
